The Basic Sciences & Humanities Department equips first-year students with fundamentals in the basic sciences, basic engineering courses and subjects in the domain of humanities. Basic science courses are an integral part of the engineering curriculum and a prerequisite for the domain knowledge in specialized branches. Humanities Science subjects familiarize students with corporate, social and ethical practices, making them meaningful contributors of knowledge to society. Basic Sciences department constitutes of highly qualified and experienced faculty of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Basic Mechanics and English supported with well equipped laboratories and trained staff.

Championship in Rifle and Pistol, 2024, hosted by Saragarhi Shooting Academy, Chennai.

The Department of Basic Science and Humanities launched its student association, 'Samyuktha', on September 12, 2025. The event featured addresses by the Principal Dr. N. Gunasekaran and Prof. K R. Vijayakumaran Pillai, Emeritus Professor. The chief guest, Dr. T Aravind Krishna, Former Senior Manager at Chainalytics Private Limited (NTT DATA) inaugurated the association and delivered a motivating talk on the “Road Map to Excellence in Life Through Engineering Education,” charting a path for student success
The Standardised Test for English Proficiency (STEP) TRAIN Orientation Programme for S1 B.Tech students was inaugurated on 3rd February 2025 at Jawaharlal College of Engineering and Technology. The session was led by Mr. Hari Hara Sudhan M, Sr. Assistant Manager - Operations, STEP, from The Hindu Group. Dr. N. Gunasekaran, Principal, Prof. K. R. The Department of Basic Science and Humanities organized a one day workshop ‘Application of Linear Algebra in Modern Communication Systems’ on 27.07.2024. The event, led by Dr. Chungath Srinivasan, highlighted the role of linear algebra in data transmission and network operations.

Project Description: The RC Aircraft project involves the design, construction, and operation of remote-controlled aircraft. The project encompasses various stages, including aerodynamic design, selection of materials, fabrication of components, installation of propulsion systems and control mechanisms, and testing and fine-tuning of flight performance. Participants enjoy the challenge of building and piloting their creations, as well as the opportunity to explore aerodynamics and aviation principles in a hands-on way.
