I feel proud to introduce you to the Department of Basic Science which plays a vital role in an Engineering college catering to the teaching of Basic Science and Humanities for engineering students of all branches. The purpose of Basic Science in engineering is to lay a strong foundation of basic principles of various disciplines such as Mathematics, physics, chemistry, computers and communication skills in the mind of students so that they can proceed to the rest of their years of study with up-to-date knowledge and training of basic engineering skills. This department strives for increasing the knowledge, enhancing the critical thinking, ability to change information into knowledge and power of analysing the things technically. We always intend to impart knowledge through a closed knit family of highly competent and dedicated faculties. The teaching module comprises lectures, tutorials and practical. The methodology adopted in the class room is based on comprehensive lectures, regular assignments and interactions between teachers and students. Our laboratories have been well established not only to cover complete syllabus but also to motivate students to learn beyond the syllabus which definitely help the students to become promising engineers in future.

The Engineering Physics Laboratory at our institution offers students the opportunity to grasp physics concepts through experiential learning. It provides a foundational understanding of engineering principles via carefully curated experimental setups that yield precise quantitative measurements. The Engineering Chemistry Laboratory aims to provide students with hands-on experience and a solid understanding of chemical analysis principles. It provides students with a practical approach to various techniques used in engineering application. They are trained both quantitatively and qualitatively to enhance problem-solving abilities. Most experiments are correlated to theoretical concepts, offering a foundational understanding of engineering principles. Equipped with instruments like digital potentiometers and pH meters, the spacious and well-maintained lab features experiments such as,
- Estimation of total hardness of water-EDTA method
- Estimation of total hardness of water-EDTA method
- Estimation of copper in brass
- Estimation of dissolved oxygen by Wrinkle’s method
- Potentiometric titration of NaOH with HCl
- Preparation of Phenol-Formaldehyde Resin
- Determination of cell constant and conductance of unknown solutions using conductivity cell
- Determination of unknown concentration of coloured solution using colorimetry
Achievements
Rena Sherin M.A. of S1 CSE (Data) secured remarkable success at the 15th South Zone Pistol Shooting
Championship in Rifle and Pistol, 2024, hosted by Saragarhi Shooting Academy, Chennai.
She qualified in both the 10m Air Pistol and 50m Free Pistol events and clinched the silver medal in
the 50m Free Pistol category. Congratulations Rena Sherin!
MILESTONES
"The Department of Chemistry, led by Professor VN Madhusudhanan, has developed a device for recharging batteries in a more economical manner. Previously, under Professor Madhusudhanan's leadership, the Department focused on generating electricity from easily accessible natural sources often overlooked as insignificant."

STEP TRAIN ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
The Standardised Test for English Proficiency (STEP) TRAIN Orientation Programme for S1 B.Tech students was inaugurated on 3rd February 2025 at Jawaharlal College of Engineering and Technology. The session was led by Mr. Hari Hara Sudhan M, Sr. Assistant Manager - Operations, STEP, from The Hindu Group. Dr. N. Gunasekaran, Principal, Prof. K. R. Vijayakumaran Pillai, HoD, Basic Science and Humanities, and Mr. Anoop, Administrative Manager extended their support and encouragement.

The Department of Basic Science and Humanities organized a one day workshop ‘Application of Linear Algebra in Modern Communication Systems’ on 27.07.2024. The event, led by Dr. Chungath Srinivasan, highlighted the role of linear algebra in data transmission and network operations.
Linguistic Excellence Competition
The English Club at JCET, the Verb Vibe, organized a three-stage Linguistic Excellence
Competition: self-introduction, extempore speech, and group discussion. The winners were
rewarded with prizes and certificates.

Nithya Niji, a student of B.Tech S2 Aeronautical Engineering, participated in the Kanal Fest 2023-24 district-level Monoact competition organized by the Kerala Government's Department of Women & Child Development. She secured the Second Prize. Nithya has been selected to compete at the State level competition.

1. Drone with Integrated AI (Working Model)
Branch: S1 B.Tech Aeronautical Engineering
Participants: Sabari Vijayan, Naveen J Gama, Fahad Mohammad Anz, Firas Yousuf Abbas, Liyo Roy
Aim: To develop a drone equipped with artificial intelligence capabilities, enhancing its autonomy and performance.
Project Description: The project involves designing, building, and testing a drone equipped with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. This includes integrating AI algorithms for autonomous navigation, object recognition, and decision-making processes. The drone will be capable of operating independently, analysing its surroundings in real-time, and performing tasks such as aerial surveillance, mapping, or package delivery with greater efficiency and accuracy.
2. R C Aircraft (Working Model)
Branch: S1 B.Tech Aeronautical Engineering
Participants: Mohammad Sinan, Suvarna P S, Fathima Fidha K, Aslaha Farhath K P, Haritha R S
Aim: To design, construct, and operate remote-controlled aircraft for recreational or practical purposes, such as hobby flying, aerial photography, surveillance, or educational endeavours.
Project Description: The RC Aircraft project involves the design, construction, and operation of remote-controlled aircraft. The project encompasses various stages, including aerodynamic design, selection of materials, fabrication of components, installation of propulsion systems and control mechanisms, and testing and fine-tuning of flight performance. Participants enjoy the challenge of building and piloting their creations, as well as the opportunity to explore aerodynamics and aviation principles in a hands-on way.
3. Smart Street Light (Still Model)

Aim: To show the importance of smart street light.
Project Description: These devices when implemented on standard streetlights, can detect movements that enables dynamic lighting and dimming.it also allows neighbouring fixtures to communicate with each other.
4. Converting 2D Drawings to 3D Solids
Branch: S1 B.Tech CSE (Cyber Security)
Participants: Aadil Rahman, Rizwa
Aim: To develop software or tools that automate the process of transforming 2D drawings into accurate and detailed 3D solid models. This aims to streamline design workflows, improve efficiency, and enhance visualization in various industries such as architecture, engineering, and manufacturing.
Project Description: Converting 2D Drawings to 3D Solids involves developing software or tools capable of transforming 2D drawings or designs into three-dimensional solid models. By leveraging advanced algorithms and modeling techniques, this project aims to streamline the process of creating 3D representations from 2D sketches, facilitating faster prototyping and design iterations in various industries such as architecture, engineering, and manufacturing.
5. Fish Feeder
Branch: S1 CSE (Data Science)
Participants: Sourav A R, Fasalu Rahman, Muhammed Irfan K, Gurudathan V
Aim: To design and implement an automated feeding system for aquariums, ensuring consistent and timely feeding of fish to promote their health and well-being, particularly when owners are not present.
Project Description: The Fish Feeder project is an automated feeding system for aquariums or fish tanks. This system incorporates programmable timers or sensors to dispense precise amounts of fish food at scheduled intervals, ensuring that fish are fed consistently even when their owners are away. By automating the feeding process, the project seeks to promote fish health and well-being while providing convenience for aquarium enthusiasts.
6. Automatic Sanitizer Dispenser
Branch: S1 CSE (Data Science)
Participants: Smisha V, Sai Surya M, Alakananda, Medha V P, Akhila A, Anjali Satheeshan C
Aim: To provide a hands-free solution for dispensing sanitizer in public spaces, promoting hygiene and sanitation by minimizing germ transmission and ensuring convenient access to disinfection measures.
Project Description: The Automatic Sanitizer Dispenser focuses on designing and implementing a hands-free solution for dispensing sanitizer in public spaces. Utilizing motion sensors or proximity detection technology, the dispenser automatically detects the presence of hands and dispenses an appropriate amount of sanitizer, minimizing the risk of germ transmission. This innovative system promotes hygiene and sanitation by providing a convenient and efficient means of disinfection in high-traffic areas such as offices, hospitals, schools, and retail establishments.
7. Automatic Car Parking Gate
Branch: S1 B.Tech CSE (Data Science)

Aim: To revolutionize traditional parking methods by implementing an advanced system that optimizes space, enhances convenience, and reduces congestion in urban parking environments.
Project Description: The automatic car parking gate aims to streamline parking processes in urban areas by implementing a sophisticated system of sensors and automated controls. This technology facilitates efficient and convenient parking, particularly in congested spaces, by optimizing space utilization and reducing the need for manual intervention. The project seeks to enhance the overall parking experience for users while addressing urban parking challenges.
8. Hand Gestured RC Car- Working Model
Branch: S1 ECE
Participants: Sharath Nair, Sivapriya, Rishab
Aim: To explore innovative human-machine interaction techniques, promote accessibility in remote control systems, and provide an engaging platform for learning about sensor integration, signal processing, and wireless communication technologies.
Project Description: The hand gestured RC car model aims to develop a glove embedded with sensors to detect hand gestures, enabling intuitive wireless control of an RC car. By interpreting the gestures and transmitting them wirelessly to the car's control system, users can effortlessly operate the vehicle with simple hand movements. This project explores innovative human-machine interaction techniques, promoting accessibility and demonstrating the potential applications of gesture recognition technology in remote control systems.
